My Story

Who I Am and Why I Do the Work I Do

Psychotherapy is an expression of who I am, not just a profession that I practice. The experiences of my own life—the joys, losses, loves and experiences—all contribute to my being the man and therapist I am today. Mentors and colleagues have touched my life and influenced my work as well. There are too many to mention, but their contribution is captured by this quote:

But when it comes to putting broken lives back together…the human
best tends to be at odds with the holy best. To do for yourself the best
that you have it in you to do—to grit your teeth and clench your fists
in order to survive the world at its harshest and worst—is, by that very
act, to be unable to let something be done for you and in you that is
more wonderful still. The trouble with steeling yourself against the
harshness of reality is that the same steel that secures your life
against being destroyed secures your life also against being opened
up and transformed. You can survive on your own. You can grow
strong on your own. You can even prevail on your own. But you
cannot become human on your own.

My Passion, Purpose and Perspective

Two movies capture the essence of my passion, purpose and perspective.

The Lion King. Don’t be fooled. What appears to be an animated movie for children is chock full of life lessons for adults. The movie follows Simba, a lion cub, as he flees taking his place as king to lead and care for the pride. Two events contribute to the liberation of his True Self. One is seeing his reflection in a pool of water and hearing a deep internal voice say, “You have forgotten who you are!”

The other is an encounter with a wise baboon named Rafiki. Rafiki challenges Simba to turn around and face his pain and fear. When he does, Simba emerges as king, not just by birthright, but forged through the fires of trial and failure. This story illustrates why I love what I do—freeing people to be their True and Best Selves. My passion for accompanying people through a wide variety of issues and challenges comes from experiencing firsthand the fruit of dealing with the struggles in my own life, marriage, and work.

Good Will Hunting

Robin Williams won an Academy Award for his role in Good Will Hunting. He plays Sean Maguire, a wise and caring psychologist helping Will Hunting (Matt Damon). Will has a brilliant mind, but uses it as a fortress to protect himself from past trauma. While the fortress walls lock out Will’s pain, they also block intimacy and joy. Sean skillfully and patiently helps free Will to discover and express love and passion with courage and compassion.

Currently offering remote sessions exclusively.

We all long to live full and satisfying lives. Sometimes, however, we hit a dead end, or feel stuck in patterns that sabotage the quality of life we long for. As much as we’d like to bring about the needed changes on our own, sometimes we need outside help. Calling on a therapist is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, making use of the trained skills of a professional is a sign of strength, courage, and the desire to invest in yourself.
During the initial session, we will talk about what brought you to therapy. We’ll define your goals and the issues you want to address. In the case of couple and family sessions, each person will be asked to share their perspective. I will ask questions about the problem to develop a deeper understanding, and may ask questions about other issues, individual histories, and solutions you’ve already attempted. Subsequent sessions will focus on reaching your goals along with addressing obstacles and conflicts that arise along the way.
Sessions are usually 50 min long. That can be extended particularly for people who travel from out of town.
We usually start meeting on a weekly basis and then space sessions further apart as things improve. Weekly sessions allow for addressing important issues and maintain a sense of continuity through the process. The frequency of sessions, however, is flexible and is based on your needs.
The duration of therapy varies greatly from person to person and depends on your goals and the issues you want to address. Your goals will be defined during our first session.
Payments can be made either by email transfers at the end of each session.
